چکیده
BACKGROUND To investigate the effect of oxygen-ozone (O2-O3) injection on thoracolumbar intervertebral disc herniation (IVDH) in dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ten herniated discs of five dogs were treated with percutaneous injection of an O2-O3 gas mixture with O3 concentration of 32 microg/microl intradiscally (1.5-2 microl) under fluoroscopy guidance. RESULTS Five weeks after treatment, the mean size of herniated discs was measured by computed tomography and showed significant reduction of disc volumes in all animals (8.8%+/-3.82%). The degree of shrinkage was negatively linearly correlated with disc mineralization (correlation coefficient=-0.636) and statistically significant at p<0.05. All five dogs regained their gait function and none recurred. CONCLUSION We conclude that intradiscal O2-O3 injection can decompress affected discs by disc shrinkage.

Intradiscal Injection of O2-O3 to Treat Lumbar Disc Herniations Results at Five Years
A method allowing shrinkage of a herniated disc, without an open surgical approach has long been sought. Studies on the spontaneous disappearance of disc fragments have demonstrated autoimmune responses with a chronic inflammatory reaction, and radicular pain has been shown to be mostly due to release of toxic acids . Researchers in different fields surprisingly noted that a short, calculated, ...

For disc herniations the use of open surgical approaches is reduced since new percutaneous methods allowing shrinkage of the disc and improvement of the radicular function are gaining interest. Studies on the spontaneous disappearance of disc fragments have demonstrated autoimmune responses with a chronic inflammatory reaction. Also radicular pain has been shown to be mostly due to biochemical ...

This study is a prospective analysis of 10 patients who underwent intradiscal injection of hematopoietic precursor stem cells (HSCs) obtained from their pelvic bone marrow in an attempt to rejuvenate the disc. Several studies in animals express the ability to regrow disc tissue with possible regenerative effects. No human studies have been done to date. Patients were randomly offered the option...
متن کاملOutcome and prognostic factors in non-ambulatory Hansen Type I intervertebral disc extrusions: 308 cases.
Thoracolumbar intervertebral disc disease is the most common cause of caudal paresis in dogs. Whilst the pathogenesis of the extrusion has been widely studied, treatment protocols and prognostic factors relating to outcome remain controversial. Recent studies have examined a multitude of factors relating to time to regain ambulation after decompressive surgery. Most intervertebral disc herniati...
متن کاملCt Findings of Thoracolumbar Spine Lesions in Dogs
In veterinary medicine, computed tomography (CT) is one of the most commonly used methods for imaging the spine because it provides a detailed examination of the spinal cord and surrounding tissues. The aim of this study was to assess thoracolumbar lesions in a number of dogs studied during the year 2011. There were retrospectively evaluated CT studies from 30 dogs of different breeds (mean age...
